What to Wear for a Family Portrait Session

Family photographs are always great sessions to capture for me; they mark the passing of another year and document the amazing growth of many of my clients’ families. There is something so special about seeing the love and happiness of my family captured in time and I love being able to give these lasting memories to my clients as well. With this time, also comes one very important question though- “What do we wear?”

Coordinate, don’t match:

Jeans and white shirts are a thing of the past, no really, please refrain from this 90’s trend. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors and patterns. This also is a great way to show off personalities; being bold is a good thing! Consider dressing mom first and then build the rest of the wardrobe for each family member. A no-no? Refrain from clothing with large logos, text, or images. This is not only distracting, but can throw of the cohesiveness of everyone’s outfit choice.

Keep location in mind:

Location is an important factor in decide the wardrobe for your session. For example, attire will most likely be different for a beach session vs. portraits in the park. Keep the theme of your wardrobe appropriate for the location.

Consider the decor in your home:

Most of the time, my families create some amazing wall art for their homes after their session. Wardrobe from a session can also play into the decoration of their homes as well; try and keep color palettes similar so the “fengshui” of your home is well integrated.

Think about the weather:

Remember, we live in Florida, dressing in long sleeves and pants for a summer session is probably the worst idea..ever. Keep the season and weather in mind when choosing clothing. Dress appropriate for the time and temperature. Hot, sweaty people do not make family portraits fun or their images attractive.

Be comfortable:

Love what you wear! Know your body type and feel comfortable in your outfit choice. This is your time to shine, make sure you are wearing something you feel proud to show off.
